Heavy zone, wet zone, front-of-house zone
A dropped plate, a kettlebell or a sled can chip or dent a resin film, while rubber takes the hit. Resin earns its place where cleaning, looks and traction count for more than impact.
| Area | Load on the floor | Common pick | Estimator range per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front desk and lobby | Walk-in traffic, sand from the lot | Decorative flake | $6–$12 |
| Changing rooms and showers | Water, soap, bare feet | Textured flake with a cove | $6–$12 |
| Group-class room | Footfalls, light gear | Flake, or solid color in a satin finish | $3–$12 |
| Barbell and sled lane | Dropped plates, dragged sleds | Rubber flooring | A different product and trade |
| Garage gym at home | Weights, mats | Flake or solid with rubber on top | Covered on the garage pages |
Choosing between rubber and a resin coat
| Resin coating | Rubber flooring | |
|---|---|---|
| Impact from weights | May chip or dent | Soaks it up |
| Mopping | No seams, quick wipe | Seams can trap grime |
| Sound | Hard and echoing | Muted |
| Choice of look | Wide range of colors and flecks | Fewer options |
| Cost | $6–$12 per sq ft for flake | Sold and laid by a different trade |
A common split is resin in the lobby and changing rooms and rubber in the lifting area. In a valley where people arrive hot and sweaty in summer, the entry floor also takes sand and dust from the parking lot all day.
Wet floors, sweat and grip
A coated floor can be slippery when wet or oily. Broadcast flake and a fine grit added to the top coat add texture and grip; a heavier grit adds more grip and is harder to clean. Under Cal/OSHA the business must keep walking surfaces safe, and the ADA asks accessible routes to be slip resistant. A contractor can supply a named product's published slip value with the test method, and shower zones call for the heavier texture.
Locker rooms need a dry floor and ventilation during cure, so they are scheduled for the longest closure.
Old rubber tiles, glue and a damp slab
Concrete that carried rubber tile or carpet often wears leftover glue, and a slab covered for years can hide a damp patch. Glue is the usual cause of extra prep, and a moisture test before coating is advised. For these floors the old-coating line, $2–$4 per square foot in the estimator, is the one that tends to apply. A newer building may also have a curing compound on the surface, which is ground off first.
Keeping the doors open between class blocks
A studio that runs on a class timetable can often shut one room for a weekend and keep teaching in the others. A door facing the lot helps ventilation but lets in heat: the July mean high is 97°F, and sun-warmed concrete reduces the pot life of fast-cure products. That is why base coats go on in the morning and classes shift to the evening block. The data sheet fixes when bare feet and gear may return, and in a shared suite the neighbors share the air.
A two-zone studio as a sample
Picture a studio with an 800-square-foot lobby and changing-room area in decorative flake and old adhesive to remove: $6–$12 plus $2–$4 makes $8–$16 per square foot, or $6,400–$12,800. Its 1,200-square-foot group room in flake on a sound slab runs $7,200–$14,400 at $6–$12.
| Part of the studio (hypothetical) | Size | Rate per sq ft | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lobby and changing rooms, flake, old adhesive | 800 sq ft | $8–$16 | $6,400–$12,800 |
| Group studio, flake, sound slab | 1,200 sq ft | $6–$12 | $7,200–$14,400 |
| Both zones | 2,000 sq ft | $13,600–$27,200 |
These are market estimates, not quotes, and rubber for the lifting lane is a separate purchase.
Gym Floor Coating — common questions
Can a resin floor go where rubber tile used to be?
Yes, after the old glue is ground away and the slab has been tested; leftover glue is the usual source of extra prep.
Rubber or resin for a Clovis gym?
Often both, with rubber under the weights and resin in the lobby and changing rooms, where looks and cleaning count most.
